SPEC Fault Response Team

Client: Doncaster Dome

The SPEC 24 / 7 / 365 manned "Call Out Service" has once again proved how it is essential to the smooth running of our clients business. This crucial facility provides a fast and effective life line to our growing portfolio of over 1200 HV connected sites and clients.

On the evening of Wednesday 14th May 2014 SPEC was called out to a power failure at the prestigious sports, leisure and entertainment facility, "Doncaster Dome". Immediately the SPEC Fault Response Team initiated a number of poor cable IR tests and quickly established that the 11 kV feed cable had faulted. On arrival the in-house SPEC Cable Fault Location Team then identified and pin-pointed the location of the fault.

Upon completion the client arranged his own civils to open the area up to enable positive identification of the said cable. The SPEC Fault Team completed the positive ID by means of using the Lee Vaughan Cable Identifier.

Following the identification and make of the cable it was established the faulted cable was an old imperial graphite make up cable and when data sheets were put to Joint Supplier Specialist it was advised a joint would have to be specially put together and a new JI "jointing instruction" written to cover the graphite. This process was estimated at circa 2 weeks, something site could not wait for.

Time constraints on restoring power were the most critical factor in this instance, to ensure minimal disruption to the site. Therefore it was suggested the most economical solution would be to install a new 180 metre length of 95 mm 11 kV triplex cable complete with 2 new, modern terminations at either ends to avoid future failures. By Thursday evening a new, more ideal trench route was dug to accommodate the new cable ready for the SPEC Jointing / SAP Team to start work on the Friday.

With power supplies being imperative to site for trading and ensuring the Ice Rink did not melt SPEC worked with one of its very select few specialist generator hire companies "Aggreko" to supply, install and connect a 1000 KVA diesel generator. Due to the size of the generator this had to be transported and situated close to the LV connection point so the "twist lock" power cables were kept to a minimum and there where suitable access points for fuel management.

The SPEC Jointing and SAP Team then mobilised on site Friday morning to commence with disconnecting the old ends of the cable, pulling in the new cable, complete with the 2 new "Raychem" heat shrink terminations at both ends. On Friday evening the SPEC "SAP" completed all final checks and tests to the installation – namely final IR and DC pressure tests to prove all was "fit for purpose". Upon completion all switching duties were carried out to re-instate the site to mains and removal of LV generations. All switching of site networks were carried out in accordance with the "SPEC Site Safety Rules".
