SPEC attended our clients premises in Glasgow as part of a major upgrade on a large hotel chain. The project was to replace the old oil filled switchgear, transformers and old HV cables. This work had to be completed over one shutdown as the premises operate 24/7/365 and required minimal disruption to the trading day. Because of this a generator was supplied and installed by SPEC with a short 30 minute shutdown to take full load of the hotels trading.

The decision was made to carry this out as the switchgear could not be operated live due to restrictions that applied to these units making the equipment nearly redundant without a full site shutdown. The operating costs from the losses of the old transformers was no longer cost effective so new Tier 1 low loss units to the new EU directive were installed. The HV cables were replaced to the new switchgear and the old LV cables were reused as these were suitable for the installation.

SPEC jointed the REC feeder cable due to time constraints that were applied to the job and installed new HV cables from the new switchgear to the transformers.

A new SF6 insulated 3 panel switchboard was installed giving greater reliability and suitability for the site requirements in case of individual isolation needs, with a new incomer this means the site can complete switching if required rather than needing REC isolations for every event.

The old transformers were replaced with super Low loss units that will allow savings on a monthly basis eventually covering their own operating costs. The HV cables were replaced from the transformer to the HV switchboard in existing ducts.

The complete installation was thoroughly tested on completion and a report submitted for the work.
